Redesigning Furlenco’s mobile app to increase usability

Overview

Furlenco is an online rental platform. While customers praised it for it’s excellent quality and customer service, they didn’t feel the same way about the shopping experince on the mobile app. Reviews said it was confusing and overwhelming.

The goal of the project is to increase usability by making it consistent, easy to navigate and easy to read.

Shopping should be fun and simple.

Why were the users overwhelmed?

Why were the users overwhelmed?

“Shopping shouldn't be complicated and overwhelming; it’s meant to be fun, enjoyable and simple”

Shopping in general can be overwhelming for some people given the huge number of choices. Cluttering the UI with so many other things just adds to the problem, and that's exactly what was happening here.

Big promotions. The home page is filled with promotions, making it hard to browse products.

Improper information hierarchy. For instance, a main subscription feature “UNLMTD” did not have a dedicated tab, instead it was just a banner in the home page.

Hidden information. Users had to open the product to know if it’s in stock or not.

An efficient home page with better readability

An efficient home page with better readability

Current app has large sections of promotion that covers the home page, making it harder for users to do what they have come to the app for - browsing products.

Home page was showing information about renting and subscription while main navigation tabs had separate tabs for home, rent and buy. To create a clear information hierarchy, I made home page a common place for 3 main categories in Furlenco - Rent, Subscribe & Buy.

Home page before redesign and after

No more huge promotions that hinders browsing.

While huge promotion banners are beneficial for the business, it can sometimes do more bad than good.

To create a good balance between promotions and browsing, I reduced the size of the banner but made it solid brand blue to draw attention.

As the client wanted all 3 features (rent, subscribe and buy) equally promoted, I replaced the UNLMTD banner with a section of these 3 features.

Updated promotion banner

Updated features

A simple and better nav bar.

Added subscribe feature to the nav bar as it was a crucial to the business.

An empty cart tab in the navigation bar is unnecessary, it can be shown when a product is added to the cart. So, removed cart tab from navigation bar and moved the search to the header.

The rent categories were in the home page which is a common for the 3 main features - Rent, Buy & Subscribe.

To improve the information architecture, I moved the rent categories to the Rent tab.

Efficient browsing.

Efficient browsing.

Users had to open the product to know if it’s in stock or not. So I’ve added a “Out of stock” tag on products that are not in stock in the rent tab.

The favourite option was not visible here, users had to go to the product page to add it to their list so, I’ve added the favourite option here.

Icons that represent these beautiful furniture.

Icons that represent these beautiful furniture.

The existing icons seemed bulky and did not fit with the updated UI. So, I created some simple and elegant custom icons that represent the curves of these beautiful furniture!

New icons

A brand new cart.

A brand new cart.

The new cart has better color and information hierarchy.

Current progress indicator had 3 steps and each step had multiple steps inside it with it’s own progress indicators which was confusing. I replaced it with a progress indicator that shows the progress in each step.

The current Buy tab was inconsistent with the rest of the app.

The current Buy tab was inconsistent with the rest of the app.

The current Buy page looks different in terms of the experience and the UI than the rest of the app.

The nav bar goes away and you get a back button to go back to the main page. This inconsistency between main tabs of the app leds to navigation issues.
